In a significant move against wildlife crime, the year 2024 has seen intensified efforts in Alagoas, Brazil, to combat the illegal captivity of wild animals. The Environmental Police Battalion (BPA) has reported the rescue of 3,734 animals, primarily birds, from illegal captivity. This initiative aims to enforce environmental laws and raise awareness about the detrimental effects of wildlife trafficking.

Among the most affected species is the loro hablador (Amazona aestiva), one of the most trafficked birds in Argentina. The species has faced severe population declines due to habitat loss and illegal capture. Conservation programs are underway, particularly in the La Esmeralda rescue center, where efforts are being made to rehabilitate and eventually release these birds back into their natural habitats.

Veterinarian Mauro Pergazere emphasizes the importance of community involvement in conservation efforts, educating locals about the ecological role of the loro hablador as seed dispersers. Despite the challenges posed by deforestation and illegal trade, progress is being made through educational initiatives in schools and community outreach.

Both Brazil and Argentina highlight the ongoing battle against wildlife crime, with authorities urging public participation in reporting illegal activities. As these countries work towards protecting their unique biodiversity, the collaboration between law enforcement and community education remains crucial in ensuring the survival of endangered species.
