Mercedes W196R 'Streamliner' Sells for Record-Breaking $53 Million at Auction

A historic Mercedes F1 car, the W196R 'Streamliner,' has shattered records at an RM Sotheby's auction, selling for a staggering $53 million. This makes it the most expensive Grand Prix car ever sold at auction.

The Streamliner, driven by five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio, was a key player in the 1955 season, winning the Buenos Aires Grand Prix. Legendary driver Stirling Moss also piloted the car, setting the fastest lap at Monza. The car was retired by Mercedes and donated to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, where it has been carefully preserved.

The buyer, who wishes to remain anonymous, paid a premium for this rare and exclusive piece of automotive history. The Streamliner's significance, coupled with its impeccable condition, likely contributed to its record-breaking sale price.
