Steve Lazarides Sells $1.4M Banksy Collection in LA Auction

Steve Lazarides, the long-time associate of street artist Banksy, auctioned a significant portion of his personal collection in Los Angeles this week, netting approximately $1.4 million. The auction, titled 'Under Duress: the Banksy Collection of Steve Lazarides,' took place on October 31 at Julien's Auctions.

Among the standout pieces was an original proof print of Banksy’s iconic 'Girl with Balloon,' which sold for $104,000, far exceeding its $60,000 estimate. Lazarides, however, expressed his disdain for the print, stating, 'I can't stand it... it's a little girl losing her heart.'

Another highlight was Banksy's 'Hooded Figure,' which fetched $78,000, nearly doubling its estimate. Lazarides, who managed Banksy for many years, explained that he decided to sell the collection to refocus on his photography career after 25 years immersed in the street art scene.

The auction featured 173 lots, including 15 burner phones used by Lazarides to contact Banksy, which sold for $15,875. Lazarides remarked on the commercialization of Banksy’s work, stating, 'He never went into it for money.'

While this sale significantly reduced his collection, Lazarides retained a few personal items, including notes from Banksy. He emphasized his desire to return to photography and leave behind the extensive collection that marked a pivotal chapter in his life.
