Nepal Faces Severe Flooding as Monsoon Rains Cause Chaos

In a devastating turn of events, Nepal is grappling with the aftermath of persistent downpours that have triggered widespread flooding and landslides, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 66 lives since Friday. The relentless rains have particularly impacted the Kathmandu valley, home to around 4 million residents, where normal activities have come to a standstill.

Rescue operations are currently underway, with teams utilizing helicopters and rubber boats to reach individuals stranded on rooftops or elevated areas. Some regions of Kathmandu reported an astonishing 322.2mm (12.68 inches) of rain in just a day, leading to swollen rivers that have overflowed onto roads and bridges.

Authorities are working tirelessly to clear debris and reopen blocked highways, as landslides have obstructed access in 28 locations. The weather forecast indicates that heavy rains may persist until Sunday morning, with a potential clearing thereafter. Binu Maharjan, a weather forecasting official in Kathmandu, noted that this year’s prolonged monsoon season is attributed to a low-pressure system affecting parts of neighboring India.

While international flights continue to operate, domestic air travel has faced significant disruptions. The Koshi river, notorious for causing catastrophic floods in the region, is currently flowing at a perilous level of 450,000 cusecs, well above the normal rate of 150,000 cusecs.

This year's monsoon season has already claimed the lives of at least 254 individuals, with 65 reported missing due to landslides, floods, and lightning strikes since mid-June. As the country braces for further rainfall, the resilience of the Nepali people is being tested once again.
