The National Identification File for dogs, cats, and ferrets (I-Cad), under the Ministry of Agriculture, has unveiled the favorite dog and cat breeds of the French for 2024.
As expected, the Australian Shepherd remains the most popular breed, with over 30,000 new identifications. This breed has been a favorite since 2018, showcasing its charm and loyalty. It makes an ideal companion for long, active walks, even if many families don't utilize its herding skills.
In second place is the Chihuahua, earning the silver medal with 31,460 identifications. This tiny breed, weighing between 1 and 3 kilograms, is perfect for apartment living but also enjoys long hikes. Its love for warmth and sunshine makes it a popular choice in Mediterranean areas.
Completing the podium is the Border Collie, with over 30,808 new identifications. Known for its intelligence and obedience, the Border Collie is not only great for herding but also serves as a companion for police and customs in the UK. Interestingly, the dog named Messi, featured in the award-winning film "Anatomy of a Fall," is a Border Collie.
