Uganda has officially commissioned the Karuma Hydropower Station on September 27, 2024, after a six-year delay attributed to vandalism of transmission lines and challenges in land acquisition. The dam, located in Kiryandongo, over 220 kilometers (137 miles) north of Kampala, has the capacity to generate 600 megawatts of electricity.
Construction of the facility began in 2013, with funding primarily provided by Exim Bank of China, which covered 85% of the total $1.7 billion cost. The commissioning ceremony was attended by President Yoweri Museveni, highlighting the project's significance for Uganda's energy sector and economic development.
The completion of the Karuma Hydropower Station is expected to enhance Uganda's electricity supply, potentially boosting industrial growth and improving access to power for millions of citizens.
