Maersk Launches New Methanol Container Vessel 'Alexandra Maersk' Amid Global Decarbonization Efforts

On 9 October 2024, A.P. Moller - Maersk launched its latest dual-fuel methanol container vessel, 'Alexandra Maersk', at the Port of Felixstowe, United Kingdom. This vessel is part of a significant initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector, marking a crucial step in global efforts toward sustainability.

The event was attended by UK's Maritime Minister Mike Kane, representatives from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and Maersk employees. Kane emphasized the importance of innovation in achieving a greener maritime industry, stating that delivering environmentally friendly transport is a top priority for the UK.

'Alexandra Maersk' is the sixth vessel in Maersk's fleet capable of operating on methanol, contributing to the company's ambitious decarbonization plans. The new vessel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65% to 90% compared to conventional fossil fuels. This aligns with the growing global focus on alternative fuels and sustainable shipping practices.

Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. Moller - Maersk, highlighted the importance of partnerships with customers like Primark to facilitate the transition to greener ocean transport. He called for the IMO's support in closing the price gap between green and fossil fuels, emphasizing that true progress requires collective efforts.

The launch of 'Alexandra Maersk' is not only a milestone for Maersk but also reflects a broader movement within the shipping industry towards sustainability and reduced emissions, which are critical for addressing climate change on a global scale.
