International Marine Science Congress in Havana to Address Climate Change and Biodiversity

Havana, September 29, 2024 - The XII Congress of Marine Sciences will take place in Havana from October 1 to 4, featuring representation from nearly ten countries. The congress, themed 'Cuban Science for the Resilience of Marine-Coastal Ecosystems,' marks the first such event since the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing significant interest from scientists, environmental educators, and policymakers.

Participating countries include Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the United States, Germany, Portugal, and Brazil. U.S. professor Mark Friedman praised Cuba's efforts in coral reef restoration, calling it an example for other nations and highlighting the innovative 'Tarea Vida' initiative aimed at combating climate change.

The congress will be organized by the National Oceanographic Committee in collaboration with UNESCO, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, and the National Aquarium. Key topics include human impact on risk management, climate change in island states, and the Caribbean States Association's role in biodiversity conservation.

The event will feature keynote lectures, round tables, symposia, oral presentations, and posters, held at the Meliá Habana hotel and the National Aquarium.
