Brazil's Green Economy Secretary Calls for Global Cooperation at Upcoming COP-30

On September 26, 2024, in São Paulo, Brazil, Rodrigo Rollemberg, the National Secretary for Green Economy, emphasized the urgent need for global cooperation in addressing climate change at the upcoming COP-30 in Belém. He highlighted the necessity of creating a tropical forests fund, arguing that since everyone suffers from environmental degradation, all should contribute to its restoration.

Rollemberg stressed Brazil's pivotal role in ensuring global energy, climate, and food security. He proposed a global binding instrument for compensating forest services and outlined the goal of restoring at least 12 million hectares of forest by 2030. He identified three main challenges for future COPs: emission reduction, climate adaptation, and financing.

He underscored the importance of collective action across all sectors to combat the climate emergency, noting that significant changes in energy, transport, and industry practices are essential. Rollemberg also pointed out the need to eliminate illegal deforestation and significantly reduce legal deforestation, while advocating for a low-carbon agriculture model.

Moreover, he mentioned upcoming legislation on 'future fuels' to be sanctioned by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on October 8, which aims to promote the production of sustainable biofuels, including green hydrogen. He expressed optimism about attracting international companies to Brazil for decarbonization efforts.

Rollemberg concluded by calling the climate financing challenge a top priority, urging developed nations to fulfill their investment commitments to developing countries. He described the Brazilian diplomatic mission at COP-30 as an unprecedented challenge to shift from competition to cooperation for life.
