Gaza Strip - The UNOPS Director, Jorge Moreira da Silva, warned that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza persists despite the ceasefire agreement. He emphasized the importance of sustaining the truce during his visit on Thursday.
UNOPS is delivering fuel, a critical energy source, and managing aid deliveries after Israel restricted UNRWA's operations. Moreira da Silva described the infrastructure as devastated, with 70% destroyed.
He stressed the need for immediate humanitarian aid and preparations for reconstruction, including debris removal, road repair, and restoration of essential services. He called for international mobilization.
Following USAID's funding suspension, the EU's role has increased. The EU has provided over €450 million in humanitarian aid to Gaza since 2023, including a recent €120 million package. European flights have delivered over 3,800 tons of aid.
Moreira da Silva expressed confidence in the EU's commitment and urged the international community to maintain pressure for ceasefire adherence and provide aid to Gaza.
