Ossama Anjiem, also known as Ossama al-Masri, was detained in Turin earlier this month under an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for alleged crimes against humanity. Anjiem was accused of being complicit in murder, rape, and torture at a detention center near Tripoli.

Last week, he was released on a technicality and subsequently flown back to Libya on an Italian state aircraft. The ICC has expressed concern, stating that it was not consulted regarding this decision and has demanded an explanation from the Italian authorities.

In a social media post on January 28, 2025, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that she is under investigation for allegedly aiding and abetting a crime and misusing public funds. In her video statement, she asserted that she would not be intimidated and suggested that her stance may have led to her being disliked by those opposed to change in Italy.

Meloni also mentioned that Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, and cabinet undersecretary for intelligence, Alfredo Mantovano, are also under investigation.
