Bolu Hotel Fire Investigation Leads to Additional Arrests Amid Controversy

On January 26, 2025, in Bolu, Turkey, the investigation into the tragic hotel fire at the Grand Kartal Hotel, which resulted in the deaths of 78 individuals, has seen six more suspects arrested, bringing the total number of detainees to 15.

The Bolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that among the recently detained were key figures including the hotel's owner, Halit Ergül, the general manager, Emir Aras, and the hotel manager, Zeki Yılmaz.

Additionally, personnel from the Bolu Municipality, including the Deputy Mayor responsible for the fire department, Sedat Gülener, and the Deputy Fire Chief, Kenan Coşkun, have been summoned for questioning.

In a related development, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced it has initiated an investigation into allegations that families of the deceased were mocked via phone calls. The inquiry is focused on violations of personal data privacy, insults to the memory of the deceased, and incitement to hatred.

As part of this investigation, five individuals are currently subject to arrest warrants. The Istanbul Cyber Crime Unit has been tasked with conducting searches and detaining suspects across various cities in connection with the case, as authorities continue to analyze video and audio recordings linked to the incident.
