Assassination of Iranian Judges Sparks Investigation Amidst Tensions

On January 18, 2025, two Iranian judges were shot dead in an armed attack outside the Supreme Court in Tehran. The assailant, who subsequently committed suicide, targeted judges Mohammad Moghiseh and Ali Razini, both known for their roles in cases involving national security and terrorism.

The incident occurred at 10:45 AM local time, and initial reports indicate that the attacker had not filed any complaints with the court, although some sources suggest he may have been an employee there. Investigations are underway to identify any potential accomplices.

Iranian authorities have pointed fingers at Israel, insinuating that the attack may be linked to the country’s historical tensions with the Islamic Republic. The spokesperson for the judiciary mentioned that measures have been taken over the past year to combat elements affiliated with Israel.

The deceased judges were involved in multiple controversial cases, including sentencing individuals for participation in protests and critical social media activity. Moghiseh had been sanctioned by the U.S. in 2019 for presiding over unfair trials, while Razini had a history of issuing death sentences for political dissenters in the early 1980s.
