On January 1, 2025, Russia launched a drone attack on central Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to six others. This incident marked one of the most significant strikes on the Ukrainian capital in recent months, occurring just hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky's New Year address in which he vowed to do everything possible to end the war this year.

The Ukrainian emergency services reported that the attack targeted the Pechersk district, home to the presidential palace. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the body of a woman was recovered from the rubble of a residential building, while three of the injured were transported to medical facilities. Additionally, debris from intercepted drones caused fires in two districts of the city.

In his New Year speech, Zelensky condemned the attack, stating, "Even on New Year's Day, Russia's only concern is how to harm Ukraine." He also noted that 111 drones were launched at various locations across the country, with most being neutralized by air defense systems. Zelensky expressed gratitude to rescuers and military personnel defending Ukraine.

In a related development, several residential buildings in Zaporizhia were also damaged due to a drone attack early on the same day.

President Zelensky had previously indicated that Ukraine must fight both on the battlefield and at the negotiation table to achieve peace in 2025. Both Ukraine and Russia have intensified aerial assaults in recent months, seeking to gain an advantage before the incoming U.S. administration under President-elect Donald Trump.

In his own New Year address, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized military themes, declaring 2025 the "Year of the Defender of the Fatherland" in Russia. He highlighted the upcoming 80th anniversary of victory in World War II and spoke of Russia's "sovereignty" and significant historical events, though he did not specify the achievements he referenced. Celebrations in Moscow were muted, with the city opting for no fireworks for the third consecutive year due to the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
