Nigerian President Orders Release of Minors Charged with Treason Amid Protests Over Economic Hardship

On November 4, 2024, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu directed the immediate release of all minors detained during protests against the rising cost of living. This decision follows public outcry over the arraignment of at least 30 minors, who were charged with treason and inciting a military coup after participating in demonstrations in August.

The protests, which occurred in Abuja, Lagos, and other cities, were fueled by frustration over economic reforms that have led to rampant inflation and a severe cost-of-living crisis. Rights group Amnesty International reported that at least 22 individuals died during the protests due to clashes with security forces.

The government's handling of the situation has drawn significant criticism, particularly regarding the treatment of minors involved in the protests. President Tinubu has pledged to implement necessary changes to stabilize the economy, which is also grappling with widespread insecurity affecting the agricultural sector.
