ICANN81 in Istanbul: Shaping the Future of Internet Governance

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will host its 81st Public Meeting in Istanbul from November 9-14, 2024. This global event, organized by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), will bring together participants both in-person and virtually to discuss pressing issues in Internet governance.

ICANN81 is a pivotal occasion for the international community to engage in discussions that are crucial for the future of the Internet. Sally Costerton, ICANN's Interim President and CEO, emphasized the significance of this meeting, particularly with the upcoming launch of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) aimed at fostering innovation and diversity. The event aims to empower diverse voices, ensuring the Internet remains a resilient and inclusive platform.

Key topics at ICANN81 will include the New gTLDs Program, which represents the next major expansion of the Domain Name System (DNS). This initiative is designed to enhance competition and consumer choice while providing opportunities for underrepresented groups, particularly from developing nations, to participate in the Internet's evolution. A highlight will be the Applicant Support Program (ASP), set to launch in November 2024, which will offer financial assistance and resources to eligible applicants, including nonprofits and small businesses.

The meeting will also showcase ICANN's multistakeholder model, a fundamental aspect of its governance approach, as preparations begin for the 2025 World Summit on the Information Society Review (WSIS+20). This model promotes collaboration among governments, the private sector, civil society, and the technical community, ensuring that all stakeholders have a voice in shaping the Internet's trajectory.

During the event, the Dr. Tarek Kamel Award for Capacity Building will be presented, honoring significant contributions within the ICANN community. Registration for both in-person and virtual attendance is open until November 8, 2024, with no on-site registration available. The meeting is free and accessible to all interested parties.
