Mahindra to Launch Petrol-Hybrid SUV by 2026

Mahindra & Mahindra is set to introduce its first petrol-hybrid model in 2026, aiming to enter the growing hybrid vehicle market currently dominated by Toyota and Maruti Suzuki.

The company has committed ₹27,000 crore towards developing strong hybrid technology, which offers superior fuel efficiency and does not rely on charging infrastructure.

Hybrids accounted for 2.5% of vehicle sales in the first seven months of the year, up from 2% previously, indicating rising consumer interest despite higher prices compared to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) models.

Mahindra's popular SUV models, including the Scorpio and the XUV700, are expected to receive the new petrol-hybrid powertrains. The company is preparing for a future where hybrids could play a significant role in its portfolio, which also includes 9 ICE SUVs and 7 electric vehicles.

Additionally, Mahindra is in discussions to share its hybrid technology with Skoda Auto Volkswagen, potentially forming a 50:50 joint venture to enhance cost competitiveness.

Strong hybrids combine internal combustion engines with electric motors to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. The battery is charged through regenerative braking and the ICE.

Hyundai Motor India is also planning to launch its first petrol-hybrid SUV by 2027, reflecting a broader shift among automakers towards hybrid technology.
