Ukraine Plans Major Increase in AI-Enhanced Drone Production

Ukraine is set to ramp up its production of long-range drones, with plans to produce 30,000 units next year, according to Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. The initiative aims to enhance military capabilities amid ongoing conflict with Russia.

Fedorov highlighted the critical role of uncrewed robotic ground vehicles, stating that tens of thousands will be needed to support infantry operations and evacuate wounded soldiers. This move reflects a significant shift in trench warfare tactics, leveraging technology to minimize troop exposure to frontline dangers.

In 2023, Ukraine's drone production surged dramatically, with the country now producing dozens of times more long-range drones than before. Fedorov noted that while AI is utilized in some drone operations, the focus remains on improving connectivity and launch methods to counter Russian surveillance and targeting.

Ukraine is also developing drones capable of intercepting Russian Shahed-type attack drones, with several companies engaged in research and development for this purpose. The use of AI-augmented systems is becoming more common, allowing drones to autonomously reach targets even in areas with heavy electronic jamming.

Fedorov anticipates a significant increase in the deployment of autonomous drones with targeting capabilities next year, potentially paving the way for the first uses of drone swarms in combat.
