Golovkin Takes Helm at Boxing Commission to Secure Olympic Future

Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin, the former world boxing champion, has been appointed as the president of the Olympic Commission of World Boxing. His recent trip to Paraguay marks the beginning of his efforts to revitalize the sport ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This appointment comes in response to the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) concerns over boxing's future due to recent challenges.

Golovkin is currently participating in the General Assembly of the Pan American Sports Organization, where he is engaging with IOC officials. His goal is to illustrate the commitment to advancing boxing and ensuring it remains an integral part of the Olympic movement.

During his address, Golovkin emphasized, "Our objective is to strengthen and support Olympic boxing, ensuring it continues to inspire athletes worldwide." His remarks come in the wake of the IOC's suspension of the International Boxing Association due to mismanagement and financial issues, which led to the IOC overseeing boxing in the last two Olympic Games.

Golovkin's commitment to the sport is clear as he stated, "Together we can safeguard the future of our sport. I intend to work closely with the IOC on issues related to boxing's commitment to the Olympic values of honesty, fairness, and transparency." His presence at the assembly alongside prominent figures such as IOC President Thomas Bach underscores the significance of this initiative.
