December 2024 Lunar Calendar: Full Cold Moon and Meteor Showers

On December 15, 2024, the last full moon of the year, known as the Cold Moon, will occur at 10:01 AM in the constellation Gemini. This lunar event coincides with the onset of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, shortly before the winter solstice on December 21.

The term 'full moon' refers to the moment when the geocentric longitudes of the Moon and the Sun differ by 180 degrees, while a new moon occurs when they align. The full moon marks the beginning of a lunar cycle, the period between two consecutive new moons.

The Cold Moon will be visible without special equipment, although binoculars or telescopes can enhance the viewing experience by reducing lunar brightness. Ideal viewing locations include areas with low light pollution and unobstructed horizons, such as rural regions or elevated terrains.

In addition to the Cold Moon, December features two new moons: one on December 1 in Sagittarius and another on December 30 in Capricorn. The month also hosts two meteor showers:

  • Geminids: Peaking between December 13 and 14.

  • Ursids: A less prominent shower, peaking on December 22.

Additionally, on December 7, Jupiter will be in opposition to the Sun, reaching its maximum brightness and size for the year.
