Orionids Meteor Shower Peaks Mid-October, Offers Spectacular Sky Show

The Orionids meteor shower, renowned for its brilliance, is expected to illuminate the night sky throughout October. NASA reports that the shower peaks around mid-October, with meteors characterized by their brightness and speed.

Viewing conditions will be influenced by the presence of a bright waning gibbous moon, which may obscure fainter meteors. Optimal visibility relies on clear skies and dark locations, away from urban light pollution.

The Orionids originate from Halley's Comet, with particles shed from the comet's nucleus during its 76-year orbit around the sun. As these particles enter Earth's atmosphere, they create the meteor shower, which can yield up to 15 meteors per hour at its peak on October 21.

Skywatchers are encouraged to find a dark area for the best viewing experience. Bill Cooke from NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office recommends lying flat on one's back to maximize the field of vision. The shower will remain active until November 22.

Halley's Comet last graced the inner solar system in 1986 and will not return until 2061.
