Severe Storms Claim Lives in BC - Oct 23, 2024

Three fatalities have been confirmed and at least one person remains unaccounted for following a significant atmospheric river event that impacted British Columbia's south coast and parts of the Interior. The storm, characterized by heavy rainfall and strong winds, marked the first major weather disturbance of the fall season.

Recovery efforts commenced on Tuesday for a man who died in his vehicle during the storm. High floodwaters initially hindered first responders from accessing the area.

Record-breaking precipitation was reported, with Environment and Climate Change Canada noting the establishment of 14 daily records over the weekend. West Vancouver recorded an unprecedented 134.6 millimeters of rain on Saturday, surpassing the previous record of 34.8 millimeters set in 1970. Rainfall records in the region have been maintained since 1961.

Ken Dosanjh, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, indicated that the storm presented significant challenges due to its timing as the first major event of the season. Strong winds contributed to debris blocking storm drains, exacerbating the flooding situation.

In Coquitlam, the body of a woman, identified as 57-year-old Sonya McIntyre, was recovered after her home was swept away by a mudslide. In a separate incident on Vancouver Island, two missing individuals were linked to vehicles discovered in the Sarita River. One victim has been identified as Ken Duncan, while the other, Bob Baden, was found deceased in his vehicle.

Port Alberni RCMP reported that swift water currents and high water levels impeded recovery efforts for Baden's remains. The road conditions in the area have raised concerns, prompting discussions about monitoring and road closures in light of climate change impacts.

Additionally, a Coquitlam man, Robert Belding, is missing after last being seen walking his dog near the Coquitlam River. His dog has been found.

The District of North Vancouver declared a local emergency and issued evacuation orders for six properties in Deep Cove due to severe flooding. Premier David Eby expressed condolences to the affected families, acknowledging the devastating impact of the storm.

This atmospheric river event follows a historically severe storm in November 2021 that resulted in significant loss of life and widespread displacement.
