Urgent Cleanup Efforts Underway in l'Albufera to Restore Biodiversity After Flood Damage

VALÈNCIA, December 19, 2024 - Major cleanup and environmental recovery efforts have commenced in l'Albufera, a vital natural park in Spain, following severe damage caused by flooding on October 29. The initiative aims to restore the ecosystem and biodiversity of the area, with a target completion date set before March 15, to avoid disrupting the nesting season of local bird species.

José Gosálbez, councilor for Devesa-Albufera, visited the site to oversee the beginning of these operations, which involve the removal of solid waste and vegetation debris. The cleanup is being conducted in the Adela-Catarno sectors, one of the few accessible land routes currently available for waste extraction.

The cleanup plan is structured into three geographical areas to maximize efficiency in waste removal and management. It includes the extraction of invasive reeds and solid materials from both land and water, followed by their classification and transportation to specialized treatment facilities. The councilor emphasized the importance of effective and swift action to prevent waste decomposition and minimize environmental contamination.

In addition to ecological restoration, the initiative aims to ensure the continuity of local economic activities such as fishing, hunting, rice cultivation, and hospitality. The project involves the use of specialized machinery, including amphibious excavators and work boats, with over 40 personnel and 20 machines operating simultaneously.

In a related effort, the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura is undertaking interventions in the Chícamo River's natural reserve to improve its ecological state. This includes controlling invasive plant species and creating new habitats to support the endangered fartet fish.

Both initiatives highlight the urgent need for comprehensive environmental management to protect and restore crucial ecosystems in Spain, reflecting a broader commitment to biodiversity preservation.
