Long Before Cities, Science, and Art—A Meeting That Changed History

编辑者: Inna Horoshkina One

Long before humanity built cities, discovered science, and created art, a meeting took place that changed the history of two species. 40,000 years ago, humans and wild wolves formed an unspoken alliance, becoming companions on the path of evolution.

The dog, descended from the ancient wolf, was not merely tamed by humans—it chose to stay by our side. This bond did not define the development of Homo sapiens, but it remains one of the most remarkable examples of a deep connection between species, built on trust, intuition, and shared existence.

How Did It All Begin?

The history of the human-dog relationship dates back to the Paleolithic era. For a long time, scientists believed that dogs were domesticated around 10,000 years ago when humans transitioned to agriculture and settled into permanent communities.

However, DNA analysis of ancient dogs and wolves has rewritten this narrative. It is now known that the ancestor of the modern dog existed as early as 40,000–33,000 years ago, living alongside hunter-gatherers.

Why did wolves approach humans? Several hypotheses exist:
Mutual Benefit – Wolves gained access to food scraps, while humans acquired protectors and hunting companions.
Social Similarity – Both humans and ancient wolves lived in complex social groups based on hierarchy, communication, and care for their own.
Natural Selection – Wolves most tolerant of humans passed their genes forward, leading to the emergence of the first “proto-dogs.”

Thus, dogs were not simply tamed—they adapted to life with humans, and this process was mutual.

Dogs: Masters of Communication

Modern science confirms that dogs possess exceptional abilities in understanding humans. Unlike many other animals, they:
✅ Read our gestures and follow the direction of our gaze.
✅ Recognize intonations and emotions in our voices.
✅ Experience emotional contagion, synchronizing their state with that of humans.

"The success of this relationship is based on an incredible ability to communicate," explains Paola Valsecchi, an associate professor at the University of Parma. In her book Attenti ai cani. Una storia di 40.000 anni, she explores the depth of this millennia-old bond.

However, it’s important to remember: dogs do not exist solely for humans. Despite the common belief that they are entirely dependent on people, millions of dogs around the world still live freely, much like their ancestors.

What Can This Bond Teach Us?

From hunting partner to loyal friend, the dog has walked alongside us for thousands of years. This bond was not an evolutionary necessity—it was a conscious choice by both species.

Dogs remind us of the power of trust, intuition, and unconditional love. They do not divide the world into "us" and "them," do not judge by appearance or status—they simply exist alongside us, in the shared flow of life.

And perhaps, in that, lies their greatest gift to humanity.
