Cane Corso Gains Popularity Post XL Bully Ban

The Cane Corso, a powerful Italian mastiff, has surged in popularity following the ban on XL bully dogs in the UK. Dog experts describe it as an 'XL bully on steroids,' raising concerns about its suitability as a pet.

With the XL bully ban enacted in Northern Ireland in early 2025, and earlier in England, Wales, and Scotland, many prospective dog owners are now turning to the Cane Corso as a legal alternative. This breed, known for its strength and loyalty, can weigh up to 50 kg and stands as tall as 70 cm.

While Cane Corsos are recognized by the American Kennel Club, they lack recognition from the UK Kennel Club. Their average lifespan is around eight years, but they are prone to health issues like hip and elbow dysplasia.

Experts warn that the Cane Corso is not suitable for first-time dog owners due to its size and strength. Proper training and socialization are crucial for this breed, which thrives in experienced hands.

Recent incidents involving aggressive behavior in Cane Corsos have raised alarms. A tragic case in Derby resulted in a fatality, leading to a jail sentence for the owner. Such events underscore the importance of responsible ownership and understanding the breed's needs.

The RSPCA and PDSA emphasize that while Cane Corsos can be loving companions, they are better suited to adult-only homes or families with older children. As the trend of owning powerful breeds continues, responsible ownership remains paramount.
