Rare Cyclone Roadster Shatters Motorcycle Auction Record at $1.2 Million

The Cyclone roadster, a rare motorcycle produced between 1913 and 1915, has set a new auction record, selling for an astounding $1.2 million. This sale, which took place at Mecum Auctions, surpasses the previous record for the most expensive motorcycle, a 1908 Harley-Davidson that sold for $935,000 earlier this year.

Only 14 Cyclones are believed to exist today, with just five remaining in racing configuration. Designed by engineer Andrew Strand, the Cyclone was groundbreaking for its time, boasting the first overhead-camshaft engine in the U.S. and an impressive 45 HP output. Capable of exceeding 100 mph, it was considered a hot rod of its era, despite its reliability issues during long-distance races.

Both the Cyclone and another high-value motorcycle, a 1938 Crocker twin, were part of the late Urban S. Hirsch III’s collection, a wealthy newspaper magnate known for his passion for fast vehicles. The Crocker also fetched an impressive $880,000 shortly after the Cyclone.

However, the Cyclone's new owner faces a unique restriction; the motorcycle is designated for display purposes only and is not cleared for public road use. This limitation adds a layer of exclusivity to an already remarkable piece of motorcycle history.
