In an astonishing twist of fate, three sisters from Ohio recently auctioned a rare coin inherited from their late brother, fetching over $500,000. This extraordinary event highlights the unexpected value of seemingly ordinary items.
The coin, originally purchased for around €16,800 in 1978, had languished in a bank vault for 40 years before its auction debut. Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections auction house in California, confirmed that the sisters, who wish to remain anonymous, were unaware of the coin's true worth.
The story begins in 1975 when the San Francisco Mint produced over 2.8 million sets of coins, each containing six pieces priced at €6.50. It wasn’t until years later that astute collectors discovered two of the ten-cent coins lacked the mint mark, indicating they could be rare treasures.
In 2019, a similar unmarked ten-cent coin from the same set sold for a staggering €421,000, further fueling interest in these collectibles. The sisters’ coin, now surpassing that record, has added a remarkable sum to their inheritance, demonstrating how hidden treasures can emerge from the past.
