AI Achieves 'Theory of Mind' Skills, Stanford Study Reveals

In a groundbreaking study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on November 1, 2024, Stanford researcher Michal Kosinski has made a startling claim: advanced AI systems, particularly OpenAI's GPT-4, may have developed a form of 'theory of mind.' This ability allows them to understand the thought processes of others, a cognitive skill traditionally associated with humans.

Kosinski, known for his work analyzing how platforms like Facebook glean insights from user interactions, has shifted his focus to the capabilities of AI. His experiments suggest that LLMs (large language models) like GPT-4 exhibit behaviors akin to actual thought.
