Workplace Stress: A Growing Concern for Mental and Physical Health in Mumbai

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chronic stress is increasingly prevalent in workplaces, leading to both physical and emotional exhaustion. According to Dr. Kedar Tilwe, a psychiatrist at Fortis Hospital in Mumbai, the deterioration of mental health at work can manifest in various forms.

Dr. Tilwe explains that signs of burnout include emotional fatigue, lack of motivation, indifference towards job performance, feelings of detachment, exhaustion, sleep disturbances, and increased anxiety.

Archana Singhal, a counselor and family therapist, founder of Mindwell Counsel in Delhi, emphasizes that the relationship between work stress and mental health is complex. A healthy work environment can enhance employees' mental health and well-being, while a toxic environment can detrimentally affect it.

From a medical perspective, Dr. Sreystha Beppari, a psychologist at Apollo Clinic in Viman Nagar, Pune, reveals that work-related stress and fatigue significantly impact physical health as well. "Chronic stress can lead to tension headaches, stomach issues, increased heart rate, and muscle pain. Over time, it can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections," says Beppari.

Dr. Tilwe further adds that stress and fatigue from work can result in high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and a higher risk of heart disease. Stress can also lead to sleep disorders and weight gain.

"Prolonged exposure to stress and fatigue can cause chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and other lifestyle-related diseases," Dr. Tilwe explains.

Experts recommend immediate stress relief techniques, such as deep breathing exercises and mindfulness activities, including sensory exercises, mindful breathing, and mindful eating. Regular yoga and meditation can also be beneficial.

Using stress-relief toys like squeezing a smiley ball can help, too. Building social connections by chatting with family, friends, or trusted individuals can lighten the load and reduce stress levels. Taking time for short breaks and walks can also help calm the mind.

Lastly, it's essential to energize the body with healthy snacks and stay hydrated to maintain focus.
