On January 10, 2025, significant sanctions targeting Russia's energy sector will be implemented, following an announcement by U.S. President Joe Biden. This action aims to impact over 400 entities linked to Russia's energy resources, which have been instrumental in financing its military operations in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the bipartisan support from the United States, emphasizing that these sanctions will disrupt Russia's supply chain, affecting key producers, insurance companies, and logistics facilities. He highlighted the importance of targeting entities such as Surgutneftegaz, which plays a crucial role in funding the Kremlin.
Zelenskyy stated, 'The less revenue Russia earns from oil and other energy resources, the sooner peace will be restored.' He reiterated that energy should not be weaponized, a practice he attributes to Russia's ongoing aggression.
In addition to U.S. measures, Japan has also announced new sanctions, including asset freezes on 33 entities and 12 individuals, as well as export bans on critical goods. Zelenskyy welcomed Japan's decisive actions, noting their potential to hinder Russia's military capabilities by limiting access to essential microelectronics.
