Schallenberg Engages in Key Talks at WEF in Davos

On January 22, 2025, Austrian Chancellor and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg arrived in Switzerland to participate in the 54th World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. His discussions will focus on recent developments in the Middle East and efforts towards sustainable peace and stability in the region, as well as the integration of Western Balkan states into the EU. The WEF's theme this year is 'Collaboration for the Intelligent Age.'

Schallenberg has already held talks with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed al-Thani and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi prior to the WEF. He emphasized the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas as a glimmer of hope after 15 months of conflict. However, he noted that this agreement is only the first step towards a sustainable diplomatic solution.

During his time in Davos, Schallenberg plans to meet with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi, as well as hold discussions with Syria's new Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani. He will also participate in a panel titled 'Middle East Trajectories' to address the impacts of changes in Syria and Gaza.

Regarding the Western Balkans and EU integration, Schallenberg will join leaders from Southeast Europe, including Serbia, Kosovo, and Montenegro, along with EU representatives from France and Croatia, at the 'Diplomacy Dialogue on the Western Balkans' session. He will advocate for progress in the gradual integration of Western Balkan states and the necessary reforms for EU accession. Schallenberg stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in EU enlargement, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Additionally, meetings with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Alexander Soros of the Open Society Foundations are scheduled during the WEF.
