Taipei, January 26, 2025 - A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck the Dongshan District of Tainan City at 7:49 AM today, with a depth of 8.1 kilometers. Tremors were felt across the entire island.

The epicenter was located 43.9 kilometers northeast of Tainan City Hall, registering an intensity level of 4 on Taiwan's 7-tier scale, impacting areas including Tainan, Chiayi County, Chiayi City, Kaohsiung, Yunlin, and Changhua.

Just one minute later, a magnitude 4.8 aftershock occurred in the same region, approximately 42.6 kilometers northeast of Tainan City Hall, at a depth of 6.8 kilometers. There have been no immediate reports of damage from either quake.

This seismic activity follows a series of tremors in the region, including a significant 6.4 magnitude earthquake that hit near the Chiayi County-Tainan border on January 21, which had previously caused damage to buildings and infrastructure. The recent quakes are considered aftershocks of that earlier event, raising concerns among residents in southern Taiwan and in neighboring Fujian province, where tremors were also felt.
