East African Community Leaders Push for Political Federation and Enhanced Trade Cooperation

On November 30, 2024, leaders of the East African Community (EAC) convened in Arusha, Tanzania, to discuss the establishment of a Political Federation, marking a significant step in regional integration. This initiative, originally proposed in 1963 by the EAC's Founding Fathers, aims to unify the member states into a cohesive political entity.

During the summit, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni emphasized the historical context of trade in East Africa and criticized past bureaucratic delays that hindered the federation's formation. He highlighted the need to restore the region's interconnected trade routes, which were disrupted by colonialism.

Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto noted that a survey from 2010 showed strong public support for the integration process. He acknowledged the progress made by Burundi, Uganda, and Kenya in drafting a constitution for the EAC Political Confederation and called for peace and security as essential for attracting investment.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan outlined her country's commitment to environmental conservation and clean energy transition, revealing that Tanzania allocates 4-5% of its GDP to combat climate change. She also discussed initiatives to promote youth employment through investments in various sectors.

Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed his country's eagerness to join the EAC, citing a business-oriented population and potential for investment in agriculture, infrastructure, and energy. The summit was attended by various dignitaries, including Burundian Vice President Prosper Bazombanza and EAC Secretary General Hon. Veronica Nduva.
