Germany Rejects US Plan for Gaza Reconstruction, Calls for Hamas Disarmament

The German government has voiced its opposition to a US plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, which includes the relocation of its residents. While Germany supports the rebuilding of Gaza, it has not proposed a solution for the disarmament of the Hamas, the governing terrorist organization in the region.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated on X that "we all agree that Gaza must be rebuilt as soon as possible. We Europeans are ready to contribute our part together with the USA and our partners in the region." However, she added that "the displacement of the Palestinian civilian population from Gaza would not only be unacceptable and a violation of international law, but would also lead to new suffering and new hatred. There must be no solution over the heads of the Palestinians."

Baerbock called for continued implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

Johann Wadephul, deputy leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, took a different stance. "It is good that the USA is taking responsibility, focusing on the future of the Gaza Strip and already committing to a long-term reconstruction effort." He agreed with the assessment "that the current status quo is not sustainable in the long term."

Germany has been sending hundreds of millions of euros in tax money to the Gaza Strip for years, primarily to the UN agency UNRWA. Some of its employees were involved in the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023, in which 1200 Israelis were killed and 250 taken hostage. Anti-Semitic content was taught in UN schools.

Despite this, the German government remains committed to its cooperation with the UN agency. Despite Israel's war in Gaza, Hamas still controls the devastated Gaza Strip.
