Significant Student Protests Erupt Across Serbia Amid Political Tensions

February 4, 2025 - Serbia is witnessing a wave of student protests, with significant demonstrations occurring in cities including Niš and Novi Sad. Approximately 15,000 individuals participated in the protest in Niš, marking it as one of the largest gatherings to date, with students traveling from various regions to join.

Students expressed a strong sense of unity and solidarity, with many sharing their experiences of the protests. Neda Rajković, a civil engineering student, emphasized the energy and camaraderie felt among participants, noting the importance of their collective voice in advocating for change.

Protests have erupted in over 200 locations throughout Serbia since the beginning of the year, with participation even in areas traditionally seen as strongholds of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). This widespread discontent highlights a growing dissatisfaction with the current political climate.

In response to the protests, President Aleksandar Vučić has been touring southern regions of Serbia, including Ćićevac and Trstenik. Students have criticized his visits as attempts to undermine their movements, alleging that he is trying to counter their gatherings with organized events.

Sociologist Đokica Jovanović described the student protests as a significant call for action from the youth, reflecting a deep concern for their future. He pointed out that the protests signify a collective outcry against the government’s handling of various crises.

Despite the challenges, students remain resolute in their demands, maintaining a clear and concise list of objectives. The ongoing protests and the political landscape in Serbia continue to evolve as both students and officials navigate this period of unrest.
