Ukraine Offers Coal to Transnistria Amid Humanitarian Crisis; Health Study Links Weight Loss Drugs to Heart Health Improvements

On January 25, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine is prepared to supply coal to the Moldovan state district power station in Transnistria to address the humanitarian crisis following the suspension of gas supplies from Russia. In exchange, Ukraine seeks electricity generated by this power station.

Zelensky stated that Ukraine has sufficient coal available and is willing to provide it at a low price or even free of charge if it can receive electricity in return. He expressed confidence that the Transnistrian authorities are aware of this proposal and highlighted that Ukrainian experts can assist in operating the power station if needed.

The Moldovan power station has the potential to produce up to 2 GW of electricity, while Transnistria's needs are approximately 200-220 MW. Zelensky emphasized that this arrangement could benefit not only Transnistria but also Moldova and potentially Ukraine.

Additionally, Zelensky mentioned discussions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev regarding gas supply to Eastern European countries using Ukrainian gas transport infrastructure, indicating a readiness to establish contracts swiftly based on regional demands.

In a separate development, a significant health study involving nearly two million participants revealed unexpected benefits associated with weight loss medications. The research found a correlation between these drugs and improvements in heart health, reduced infections, decreased risk of substance abuse, and lower instances of dementia.
