The quake struck at 11:18 AM local time (17:18 GMT) and was centered 29 kilometers southwest of Costa del Sol, with a depth of 33 kilometers.
Initial reports from authorities indicated no immediate casualties or significant damage. The earthquake generated at least 27 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 3.8 to 4.8, of which 11 were felt by residents.
In Guatemala, the tremor was felt in nine of its 22 departments, including the capital, but officials reported no injuries or structural damage. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction urged the public to remain calm and be prepared.
Honduran authorities also reported no casualties or damages, although residents in La Paz noted the quake's intensity. In Nicaragua, the National Institute of Territorial Studies attributed the earthquake to tectonic activity between the Cocos and Caribbean plates.
