Ukraine Secures $1 Billion from Japan and UK Amid Ongoing Financial Support Efforts

On December 24, 2024, Ukraine received a $1 billion financial injection from the governments of Japan and the United Kingdom as part of a World Bank program. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that these funds will be directed towards strengthening the economy and financing priority expenditures in social and humanitarian sectors.

Just a day prior, Ukraine had also received a $1.1 billion tranche from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This marks the sixth allocation under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), bringing the total funds received from the IMF to $9.8 billion.

Shmyhal noted that Ukraine is finishing 2024 with financial stability, emphasizing that domestic taxes, levies, and internal loans fully finance the defense forces. He highlighted that civil expenditures are being covered thanks to international partners.

To date, Ukraine has received over €16 billion from the European Union through the Ukraine Facility program and nearly $5.4 billion from its cooperation with the IMF. Direct budget support for the year has reached approximately $41 billion.

As of December 1, Shmyhal reported that over UAH 510 billion from the state budget has been allocated for social protection, UAH 140 billion for state medical guarantees, and UAH 163 billion for transfers to local budgets. The government plans to attract over $38 billion in external financing next year to cover critical non-military budget expenditures and seek funds from frozen Russian assets.
