North Korea and Russia Strengthen Military Ties Amid Global Tensions

On November 30, 2024, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov met in Pyongyang to discuss enhancing military cooperation between their countries. This meeting follows a mutual defense treaty signed in June and ratified earlier this month.

The official North Korean news agency KCNA reported that the discussions focused on deepening the strategic alliance, particularly in defense and security matters. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of their talks, emphasizing the importance of fostering friendly relations and cooperation between their armed forces.

Following his meeting with Kim, Belousov also held discussions with North Korean Defense Minister No Kwang Chol, highlighting an overall strengthening of ties in various sectors.

The growing relationship between North Korea and Russia has raised concerns in the United States and South Korea, particularly regarding reports of over 10,000 North Korean soldiers being sent to Russia to assist in its ongoing conflict in Ukraine. External analysts suggest that Russia is reciprocating this military support with supplies of oil and gas to North Korea, along with potential deliveries of anti-aircraft missiles.
