Typhoon Toraji Forces Evacuations in the Philippines Amid Ongoing Storm Threats

The Philippine government ordered the evacuation of 2,500 people on Sunday as Typhoon Toraji made landfall on the country's northeastern coast on Monday, November 11, 2024. The storm struck near the town of Dilasag, approximately 220 km northeast of Manila, bringing winds of 130 km/h.

Authorities reported that several ports were closed in anticipation of the storm, which is the fourth typhoon to hit the Philippines in a month. Recent storms, including Typhoon Yinxing, Tropical Storm Trami, and Super Typhoon Kong-rey, have collectively resulted in 159 fatalities.

While there were no immediate reports of casualties or damages from Toraji, the national disaster management office could not confirm how many of the evacuated individuals sought shelter. Schools and public offices were closed in areas projected to be most affected by the typhoon.

The weather agency issued warnings of severe winds and heavy rain in northern regions, with a 'moderate to severe' risk of storms and giant waves on the main island of Luzon. Approximately 700 passengers were stranded at ports due to official advisories stating that maritime travel was hazardous for all types of vessels.

Typhoon Toraji is expected to traverse northern Luzon on Monday, followed by a tropical depression that could impact the area on Thursday night. Meteorologist Veronica Torres also noted that Tropical Storm Man-yo, currently east of Guam, poses a potential threat to the Philippines next week.
