U.S. Military Deployments in the Middle East and New Real Estate Regulation for National Security

On November 1, 2024, the Pentagon announced upcoming U.S. military deployments in the Middle East aimed at ensuring the defense of Israel and serving as a warning to Iran. Major General Pat Ryder stated that these deployments include missile defense systems, fighter jets, and B-52 bombers.

This decision follows a series of escalations in the region, particularly since the onset of the conflict between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023. Israel has been engaged in military actions against Iranian targets, including a recent airstrike on October 26 in response to missile attacks from Iran.

In a separate development on the same day, the Biden administration finalized a new rule enhancing the authority to review foreign purchases of real estate near U.S. military bases. The rule, which will take effect in December, adds nearly 60 facilities to the review list, raising concerns particularly regarding Chinese-linked investments.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized that the new regulation will strengthen the ability of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to assess potential national security threats posed by foreign ownership of property near military installations.
