Bolivia Faces Political Turmoil as Protests Led by Former President Evo Morales Continue

On October 27, 2024, the Bolivian government issued a warning to the international community regarding destabilizing actions led by former President Evo Morales. The protests, which have been ongoing for 13 days, are seen as a threat to the democratic order in Bolivia and the stability of the South American region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Morales is attempting to disrupt democracy through these protests, which have included indefinite roadblocks. Supporters of Morales are demanding the government of President Luis Arce drop judicial proceedings against him related to human trafficking and other charges, viewing these actions as political persecution.

Protesters are also calling for solutions to rising food prices, a shortage of foreign currency, irregular fuel supplies, and respect for a congress that declared Morales the sole candidate for upcoming elections in 2023. The government has expressed its willingness to engage in dialogue but accused Morales of having personal interests that manipulate justice for his own impunity.

The official statement also highlighted the presence of violent groups and armed individuals threatening public safety. The Bolivian government urged the international community, states, multilateral organizations, and people worldwide to remain vigilant against these destabilizing actions.

The roadblocks, reported to be affecting 16 areas, have exacerbated the economic situation in Bolivia, leading to shortages of food, gasoline, and diesel. In response, the government has initiated airlifts to ensure the supply of beef and chicken to La Paz and El Alto, while fuel trucks are using alternative routes to reach distribution centers.
