Typhoon Krathon Strikes Taiwan, Causing Floods and Evacuations

Typhoon Krathon made landfall on October 4, 2024, in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, unleashing torrential rains and destructive winds across the island. The storm has resulted in at least two fatalities and the evacuation of approximately 11,000 residents as it brings severe weather conditions, including mudslides and flooding.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported wind gusts reaching 162 km/h (100 mph) and urged Kaohsiung residents to seek shelter immediately. The typhoon's impact has led to the closure of schools and businesses, with significant disruptions to electricity and water supplies.

As Krathon progresses northward, it is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by Friday, moving towards the Chinese coast. However, strong winds and heavy rains are still anticipated in various regions of Taiwan. In southern Pingtung, the storm has hindered rescue operations following a fire in a hospital that claimed nine lives.

Prior to reaching Taiwan, Krathon affected a remote group of Philippine islands, resulting in one death, one missing person, and eight injuries, along with damage to over 300 homes, as reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of the Philippines.
