The criminals create manipulated content simulating emergencies, such as kidnappings or accidents, to convince victims' families or friends that they are in danger. Through these altered videos or images, they demand money or sensitive information for the 'release' of the individual, enhancing the effectiveness of their deception.
Deepfake technology is also being exploited to steal financial information. By manipulating visuals, criminals can bypass facial recognition systems used by banks, granting them access to accounts and facilitating fraudulent transactions. This type of fraud endangers both individuals and the security of their financial assets.
To combat these threats, Condusef, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, advises vigilance and the ability to identify signs of manipulation in visual content. Indicators of altered images or videos include abrupt movements, lip-sync mismatches, or abnormal blinking.
Experts also recommend limiting personal information shared on social media, as criminals can use this data to create fake profiles and obtain confidential information. Additionally, caution is urged regarding photos and recordings posted online, as these can be manipulated for deepfake fraud.
