Google Play Store Removes Nearby Share Feature

Since 2021, the built-in Nearby Share feature in the Google Play Store has provided a convenient way to transfer applications between two Android devices without an internet connection. However, with the recent update to version 44.1, Google has decided to remove this functionality, disappointing regular users.

The Nearby Share function allowed for peer-to-peer app transfers, making it ideal for sharing apps among friends or personal devices in areas with limited internet access. Accessible from the 'Manage apps and device' section of the Play Store, this option relied on Android's quick sharing technology.

In the release notes for update 44.1, Google confirmed the removal of the app sharing feature: 'The app sharing feature on Google Play will be removed.'

While Google has not provided an official reason for this decision, it may align with a strategy to streamline Play Store features. Additionally, the company seems to be favoring its Files by Google app to fulfill this role.

Fortunately, the removal of this function does not mean the end of app sharing between Android devices. Users can continue to share apps using Files by Google, which retains most of the previous sharing capabilities while integrating additional file management tools.

For many users, the removal of the Nearby Share function from the Play Store may not have a significant impact, as Files by Google remains a viable alternative. However, this change may complicate things for those who appreciated the centralization and simplicity of the Play Store for such operations.

As the Nearby Share feature bids farewell on the Play Store, Files by Google emerges as the new go-to option for peer-to-peer app transfers. While the transition may require some adjustment, it still ensures a practical method for sharing applications, even without an internet connection.
