A recent report by World Weather Attribution (WWA) indicates that extreme weather events in 2024 resulted in significant loss of life and displacement worldwide. The WWA released its annual report detailing how a record increase in global temperatures, attributed to human-induced climate change, led to severe droughts, wildfires, storms, and floods.

The report estimates that climate change was responsible for approximately 3,700 fatalities and contributed to 26 major weather events that displaced millions. In total, 219 impactful weather events were recorded, many exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon, which has intensified under climate change conditions.

Among the notable events was Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm that struck the United States in September, causing damages estimated at $53.8 billion in North Carolina alone. The report highlights that climate change has resulted in an average of 41 additional dangerous heat days globally, contributing to record rainfall and flooding.

Two critical ecosystems, the Amazon rainforest and the Pantanal Wetland, faced severe droughts and wildfires, leading to substantial biodiversity loss. These areas play a vital role in regulating the Earth's climate and supporting economic activities.

The WWA's report emphasizes the need for urgent action, calling for a rapid transition away from fossil fuels and improved early warning systems for extreme weather. It also stresses the importance of supporting developing nations most affected by climate change.
