The Copernicus Climate Change Service has confirmed that 2024 is the hottest year on record, as extreme weather events have intensified globally. The UN Climate Summit (COP29) held in November faced criticism for insufficient funding decisions amid the escalating climate crisis.

Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service indicates that global warming has led to severe weather phenomena, including devastating floods and wildfires that have adversely impacted numerous countries.

In Canada, vast areas were affected by wildfires, while over 200 fatalities were reported in Spain due to flooding. The situation has been compounded by ongoing conflicts, such as the attacks in Gaza, exacerbating ecological destruction and public health crises.

Additionally, significant developments in environmental discussions occurred in 2024, including the 60th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Istanbul with over 400 delegates from 195 countries. The alarming trends of soil salinization and land degradation were highlighted in reports from the UNCCD and FAO, indicating a dire need for immediate action to combat food and water insecurity.

In the United States, hurricanes in September and October resulted in substantial casualties and widespread power outages. The Helene hurricane struck Florida, claiming over 200 lives and causing extensive damage across multiple states.

As the world grapples with these unprecedented climate challenges, experts warn that without significant emissions reductions, the future could be marked by increased hunger, displacement, and economic decline.
