Severe Weather Forecast in Bavaria, Germany - December 6, 2024

Residents in Bavaria are preparing for turbulent weather as forecasts predict a significant shift in conditions by the end of the week. A spokesperson from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Munich indicated that rain is expected on Friday, with snowfall likely in higher elevations.

The snow line is projected to be above 1,000 meters in the Alps and over 800 meters in the Bavarian Forest by late morning. Meteorologists suggest that areas prone to accumulation could see up to 25 centimeters of fresh snow, while the Bavarian Forest may receive around 20 centimeters, and the eastern Alpine region could experience up to 15 centimeters.

Additionally, a storm system affecting northern Germany will contribute to the inclement weather in Bavaria. The mix of rain, wind, and snow is expected to persist into the weekend, with the snow line potentially dropping to 600 meters by Sunday, allowing for snowfall even in lower-lying areas.

Rivers and streams in the region may overflow due to the continuous rainfall over the weekend. The Flood Reporting Service (HND) anticipates minor flooding in the Main river basin, particularly at select gauges along the Franconian Saale and its northern tributaries, as well as sporadically along the upper Main and in northern Franconia.

This potential for flooding is attributed to substantial precipitation over a short period. By Saturday morning, the HND expects up to 15 millimeters of rain in the eastern half of Bavaria and the northern low mountain ranges within approximately 18 hours. In areas prone to accumulation, totals could reach 25 millimeters, and in the Bavarian Forest, up to 30 millimeters.

Minor flooding is also anticipated along the upper Altmühl and in the Naab and Regen river basins. Localized alerts at level 2 are possible for the Naab and Regen, indicating potential flooding of agricultural and forestry areas, as well as disruptions on major and local roads.
