Tropical Cyclones Threaten Indonesia, November 24, 2024

Two tropical cyclone systems have been detected approaching Indonesia, as reported by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The emergence of these systems is expected to significantly impact weather conditions, particularly in regions surrounding the cyclone locations.

The two systems, identified as tropical cyclones 96S and 99B, are situated near Sumatra. The BMKG indicates that tropical cyclone 96S is located in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sumatra, with a circulation center at 9.9 degrees south latitude and 99.2 degrees east longitude. It has a maximum wind speed of 20 knots (37 kilometers per hour) and a minimum air pressure of 1,008 hPa.

The potential for tropical cyclone 96S to develop into a full cyclone within 24 to 72 hours is assessed as low to moderate, with a greater likelihood of intensification beyond 72 hours. The system is expected to remain stationary for the next 24 to 48 hours before gradually moving south-southwest.

Meanwhile, tropical cyclone 99B is located in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh, with a center at 4.5 degrees south latitude and 91.9 degrees east longitude. This system has a maximum wind speed of 15 knots (28 kilometers per hour) and a minimum air pressure of 1,006 hPa. Similar to 96S, the potential for 99B to strengthen into a cyclone is also assessed as low to moderate within the initial 72-hour period, increasing in likelihood thereafter.

Despite the low to moderate chances of cyclonic development, these systems are expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall, particularly affecting Aceh, the northern coast of Sumatra, the western coast of Bengkulu, and Lampung.

Additionally, sea conditions are predicted to be moderately high, with wave heights ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 meters in several areas, including the waters north of Sabang and the western coast of Aceh. Higher waves, reaching 2.5 to 4.0 meters, are expected in the waters west of the Nias Islands to the Mentawai Islands, as well as the southern Sunda Strait.
