Severe Air Quality Alert in Delhi - October 27, 2024

On October 27, 2024, Delhi experienced a significant decline in air quality due to stagnant winds, resulting in a 'very poor' air quality index (AQI). The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported that the AQI peaked at 355 in the afternoon, up from 255 the previous day.

Data from 40 monitoring stations indicated that three locations—Bawana, Burari, and Jahangirpuri—recorded 'severe' air quality levels. Neighboring areas such as Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and Noida also faced 'very poor' air quality, while Faridabad and Gurugram reported 'poor' conditions.

The CPCB categorizes air quality into four levels: Stage I - 'Poor' (AQI 201-300); Stage II - 'Very Poor' (AQI 301-400); Stage III - 'Severe' (AQI 401-450); and Stage IV - 'Severe Plus' (AQI above 450). The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that wind speeds in the city were recorded at 0 km/h, contributing to the stagnant pollution levels.

Prominent pollutants included PM10 and PM2.5, with PM2.5 levels reaching 110.6 micrograms per cubic meter by 5 PM. These fine particles can penetrate deep into the respiratory system, leading to health complications.

According to the CPCB, vehicular emissions contributed approximately 13% to the pollution levels. The IMD forecasted a maximum temperature of 34.2 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees above normal. Clear skies are expected on October 28, with minimum and maximum temperatures around 20 and 34 degrees Celsius, respectively.
